Workshop Description:
In this dynamic workshop, interpreters will distinguish the difference between social and academic language. They will gain essential insights and skills crucial for effective interpretation. Mastering and understanding the nuances of social and academic language is paramount for interpreters working across various settings, from classrooms to boardrooms. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises, participants will explore and analyze the distinct features of social and academic language and how they impact the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population.

Stay after the workshop for a 30 min presentation on resources from the Library Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Presenter Bio:
Brenda Boaz-Pond, MS. ED., CDI, Deaf Education is a Program Specialist working at the statewide Library Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (LSDHH), based at the Nashville Public Library. Brenda.Boaz-Pond@nashville.gov. She formerly served as a teacher of elementary and middle school students who were Deaf in Philadelphia, PA., and as an American Sign Language Adjunct Professor at North Central Michigan Community College. Her personal experience of growing up as a Deaf person highlights and influences the importance she places on early language acquisition – at home and school, with family and friends. She is passionate about supporting and serving as Deaf Mentor for parents by working with the Tennessee School for the Deaf Parent Outreach Consultants to teach parents how to read and interact with their children who are deaf or hard of hearing. When she is not working at LSDHH, Boaz-Pond is an active volunteer in the Deaf community. She is currently serving on the board of the Nashville Chapter Association of the Deaf.

Educational Outcomes:

  • By the end of the presentation, students will be able to differentiate between social and academic languages, as demonstrated through their ability to identify key characteristics of each language type.
  • Following the presentation, students will demonstrate understanding of the BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) and CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency) concepts by applying them to interpreting settings, as evidenced by their ability to explain how these concepts impact language use and comprehension in various contexts.
  • Upon completion of the lesson, students will exhibit enhanced comprehension of Cummins and Vygotsky's theories on scaffolding and language development for children with hearing loss, as measured by their ability to describe and analyze how these theories inform educational practices and support language acquisition in diverse populations.
  • By the conclusion of the presentation, students will articulate how the knowledge gained from the lesson contributes to their professional development in interpretation and related fields, as evidenced by their ability to discuss specific strategies and implications for their future career roles.
  • At the end of the session, students will demonstrate understanding of the factors contributing to language deprivation, as outlined by the BICS and CALP framework, through their ability to identify and explain how these factors impact language development and educational outcomes for individuals with hearing loss.
